EDITION 05 / 2024

Well hi there Reader!

I have always loved words. Reading was a HUGE refuge for me as a kid, and I've always loved poetry and languages...and the beauty and power that a few simple words can possess. Words alone can spark a war or save lives.

I do also love that language is a constantly evolving thing. Every day the way we use language changes to better suit who we are and where we are today. (Althought there are still some common language 'quirks' that drive me up the wall!) But I do believe that once you can get curious about that - instead of fearing the change - you start to see so much magic and fun and validation in language and words.

I tend to use too many words (and a LOT of these little parentheses lol), and I'm always in awe of people who write with succinct power. I even love Haikus - because it blows my mind that you can convey SO much meaning and feeling in just a few syllables.

Word up.

Speaking of conveying feeling through words (he says making a slick and almost imperceptible segue), this week over on YouTube I had a LOT of fun combing animation, video and...you guessed it...WORDS.

I have always loved kinetic text animations - where the words on screen are animated to be the main focus of the visual impact too. But they have historically been pretty time consuming to create, and required expensive animation software. So this week I challenged myself to create a short, kinetic text animation using JUST Canva elements, animation and video tools.

In a world that is obsessed with video content, I think it's such a great way of using words in a dynamic and engaging way. And I love that it allows you to really draw attention to the words themselves without needing to rely on expensive drone shots or aesthetic b-roll over everything. It has a lot of impact and really stands out.

Take a look over on the YouTube channel - and let me know what you think in the video comments will ya?

Meaningful Creations

Keeping with the theme this week - I wanted to share a creator who makes brilliant typographic poster art. His name is Phil, and he has a way with words. 😁 I love the irreverence and relatable-ness (is that a word?) of his designs.

I am a big fan, and don't be surprised if you see his work making an appearance somewhere in the back of my videos. (Although I do wonder if people may not get the humour if I choose the one on the left below. But lets be honest, we ALL have those days, right? RIGHT? 😳)

Although now I'm thinking I may need this triptych. 🀣
